Do
I need a dedicated IP address?
Most web site owners,
even those owners with highly successful sites, will not need a
dedicated IP address. With shared hosting there is also a shared IP
address. Meaning that many web sites all share the same IP address.
This arrangement is of no consequence and is not noticeable to site
owners or site visitors in any way.
The need for a dedicated IP address may become relevant for two reasons.
Certain SSL certificates will require a dedicated IP address to
properly secure the site. This is common for e-commerce sites that
process financial data over the internet.
The other reason is when sites become quite large and the shared
hosting environment is no longer appropriate. Larger sites will require
their own servers to operate properly as to not deprive system
resources from other sites on the same server. Sites situated on their
own servers will have a dedicated IP address.
So, if you are operating a site that needs to encrypt personal and
financial data over the internet with an SSL Certificate or if you are
operating a large or resource intensive web site, you will probably
need a dedicated IP. Otherwise, a shared IP address should be ideal.
